Tuesday of the 22nd Week in Ordinary Time

Luke 4:31-37

Are evil spirits for real? Who made them? Catholic teaching recognizes the existence of evil spirits whose leader is named Satan. They are originally part of the heavenly spirits created by God to serve Him. In the beginning, all angels were full of grace and were all happily united with the Creator. However, because of pride, a group of angels rebelled against God. In the Book of Revelation, there is a portrayal of the great war that broke out in heaven between the armies of God and those of Satan (12:7-9). In this encounter, the loyal servants of God led by Archangel Michael come out victorious. And yet, until now, the spirits of darkness continue to wage war against God. They are the ones who entice people to sin and offend the Lord.

Every time Jesus encounters a possessed person, he immediately acts to free that individual from the power of evil. There are two things that we know about this in the gospel: First, the evil spirits recognize that Jesus is the Holy One of God. And second, evil spirits are driven out by the power of Jesus' word.

Today, we are inspired to keep the virtue of righteousness. Let us remain in the side of the good and be one with Christ in fighting the power of darkness here on earth. It is important that we are always on guard of the presence and activities of evil spirits so that we will know where, when and how are we going to combat them. Let us have no fear because we know that evil spirits are powerless against good people who have the word of God in their hearts.

Monday of the 22nd Week in Ordinary Time

Luke 4:16-30

Jesus makes it clear that the Good News he brings is, first of all, for the poor and the oppressed: “He has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free. . .” Many of the authorities and influential people in Israel could hardly accept this because they had traditionally thought that the poor are simply cursed by God for whatever reason. Only the affluent in society are blessed by God.

In his public ministry, Jesus shows special heart for the poor, the sick and the sinners. These are the people who suffer from different kinds of enslavement – from poverty, illness and, above all, from sin. Because of Jesus' attitude, these people are given hope and direction in their life.

Today, the gospel inspires us to possess the virtue of special love for the poor and the less fortunate. If we are poor ourselves, we should remain hopeful because our Loving God knows our situation. But, if we are among the rich and powerful, we should do whatever we can to uplift the situation of our needy brothers and sisters.

Saturday of the 21st Week in Ordinary Time

Matthew 25:14-30

Through the Parable of Talents Jesus reminds us that all our gifts and abilities are from God. They are given to us not to be hidden but to be used according to the purpose of the Giver. What matters in the end is not the quality and quantity of our talents but how we use them in life. In the day of judgment, God will ask for an accounting of the fruits of the talents He had given us.

Jesus provided us with an example of the responsible use of talents. His abilities, such as the power to teach and heal, were used not for his personal interests but for the good of people. The gospel mentions not even once that Jesus claims something as his personal possession only. In fact, he shared all his gifts and capacities with his disciples.

Today, we are called to develop the virtue of good stewardship. Let us show to God that we are grateful for the many talents we have received from Him by taking care of them and by trying to develop them. It would please God if we use our talents and gifts for the well-being of our neighbors and that of the whole Church.

Friday of the 21st Week in Ordinary Time

Matthew 25: 1-13

The parable of the Ten Virgins is the gospel's way of telling people of the possible delay of the return of the Messiah. The story is full of symbolisms. The groom is Jesus Christ and the bride is the Church. The ten bridesmaids represent the totality of believers. While the oil symbolizes the good works of people.

Faith without good works is just like a lamp without oil – it is dead and useless. Jesus criticizes the scribes and the Pharisees because their faith in God is not accompanied by works of charity and mercy. They are like the foolish virgins who did not bring reserved oil for their lamps. When the Messiah returns, they would not have any light to give and they could not join the wedding banquet in heaven.

Waiting for somebody, whose coming is not known, is never easy. Today's gospel serves to inspire us to be patient and persevering like the wise virgins who always carry extra oil for their lamps. Let us not stop doing good so that when the Savior comes he will find us filled with light and ready to celebrate with him in heaven.

Thursday of the 21st Week in Ordinary Time

Matthew 24:42-51

Jesus uses the image of a thief in order to explain the manner of his coming to our lives. The thief would come at the most unexpected time and place. In the same way, the Lord would not let us know when and where exactly he is going to visit us. Perhaps, this is his way of knowing who among us are his faithful followers.

The true character of a person would come out as he lives his day-to-day life. For example, we can only say that a person is cleanly if he habitually cleans his house. The person who cleans his place only when he is expecting a visitor is not genuinely neat. We also can tell that a person is truly generous if he continues to share even outside the Christmas season. He who gives on special occasions only is not a true generous person.

The gospel challenges us to develop the virtue of fidelity in following Christ. Let us be consistent in serving God and one another for this is what it means to be a disciple of Christ.

Wednesday of the 21st Week in Ordinary Time

Matthew 23: 27-32

We can hardly deny the fact that we also hide somethings in ourselves such as our human frailties and sins. Normally, we put on masks because we are afraid that people might stop loving us once they know our true self. In other words, we also have some Pharisaical tendencies.

In his life, Jesus gave more importance to following God's will than to making a name for himself. In fact, because of his faithfulness to God's will, Jesus earned the ire of many people. Yet, he remained strong and confident because what mattered more for him is what God would see, not what people would notice.

Today, the gospel inspires us to possess the virtue of truthfulness. We can hide our true color from others, but not from God because He can see the intentions of our heart. And so, let us keep our consciences clear and not be bothered when people stop praising us.

Tuesday of the 21st Week in Ordinary Time

Matthew 23: 23-26

Jesus' teachings and ministry have an undeniable bias for sinners. His heart is always ready to grant forgiveness and salvation to almost anyone. But how are we going to explain Jesus' condemning words for the scribes and Pharisees? Why did he treat them quite differently from the rest of sinners?

The scribes and Pharisees were recognized as moral and spiritual leaders. People would look up to them not only in synagogues but even on the streets and marketplaces. Because of this, however, many of them became proud and self-righteous. Jesus saw in them little capacity to own mistakes and to be truly remorseful. The use of harsh words was Jesus' way of opening their eyes and consciences.

Today, the gospel challenges us to possess the virtues of humility and sincerity. Let us acknowledge our human frailties and our great need of God's mercy. We should be truly sorry for our sins and ask God for the grace of desiring to live more fully in His ways.

Monday of the 21st Week in Ordinary Time

Matthew 23:13-22

Leaders and servants of the Church are expected to show sound doctrine and good works to people. Through their Christian witnessing, many would find it easier to live righteously and to enter the kingdom of heaven.

In the gospel, the scribes and Pharisees are criticized by Jesus for being hypocrites because their teachings are not corroborated with actions. Instead of bringing people closer to God, they are the ones who lead people astray. Jesus also calls them blind guides because even their teachings are misdirected. They place more value to material offerings than to the temple itself which makes the offerings sacred.

Today, we are challenged to possess the virtue of good leadership. A good Christian is a good leader. Whether you are a priest, a government official, an office manager, a teacher, or a parent, you are called to be ethical in words and actions so that your subordinates will see the moral path to the truth and to God.

Saturday of the 20th Week in Ordinary Time

Matthew 23:1-12

The Scribes and the Pharisees were criticized by Jesus for several reasons: First, because they did not practice what they preached; second, because the good things they performed were only for show; and third, because they wanted to be recognized and served by people.

In his public ministry, Jesus established his credibility by proclaiming not only in words but also in actions. He preached about love and mercy, and he himself helped the poor, cured the sick, and forgave sinners. He did all these not to be praised by people but only to manifest God's great love for the poor and the needy.

Once again, the gospel inspires us to remain helpful and humble like Christ. Those of us who know how to serve others are considered great in the Kingdom of Heaven. “For all who humble themselves will be exalted, and all who exalt themselves will be humbled.”

Friday of the 20th Week in Ordinary Time

Matthew 22:34-40

When a Pharisee asked him what is the greatest of all commandments, Jesus quoted parts of the Old Testament: “You shall love the Lord your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind” (Deuteronomy 6:5). This is the greatest and the first of all laws. The second, he said, is just like it: “You shall love your neighbor as you love yourself” (Leviticus 19:18). Remarkably, however, when Jesus spoke about love from his own mind, he declared: “Love one another as I have loved you” (John 13:34). The nuance of this commandment of Jesus is quite significant.

We know how much Jesus has loved us. He humbled himself by becoming one like us, thereby raising our status and making us adopted children of God. He lived the life of an ordinary person so that he can minister the poor and the needy among us. He voluntarily gave his life to the service of all – by teaching the ignorant, feeding the hungry, consoling the afflicted, healing the sick and the possessed, forgiving sinners and finally, by dying on the cross – all these out of his great love for humanity. We call this kind of love “agape” - one that is freely given, unconditional, inclusive and endless.

Today, we are called to acquire the virtue of charity. Let us do our best to make our way of loving like that of Christ's. We must learn to forget our personal interests for the benefit of many others. Let us help the needy and the stranger without expecting something in return. And let us commit ourselves to continue loving and serving even when what is given back to us is misunderstanding. This is what Christian charity is all about.

Mateo 22:34-40

Thursday of the 20th Week in Ordinary Time

Matthew 22:1-14

In a parable Jesus uses the image of a wedding banquet to describe God's kingdom or reign. God is portrayed as a king who busied himself for the wedding celebration of his son. However, when everything was ready, the invited guests refused to come for different reasons. Greatly dismayed, the king ordered his servants to go to the highways and the byways and to invite all they could find, regardless if they are good or bad.

In theology, the Reign of God is the fulfillment of God's will for humanity. It is going to be a big celebration in as much as people would certainly enjoy life to the fullest once they start following the ways of God.

We, baptized Christians, belong to those who are invited for the banquet of God. The gospel challenges us to possess the virtue of obedience. Let us show our eagerness to participate in God's celebration by doing our best to observe His commandments everyday of our lives. If we can do this, God will find us properly dressed for the wedding banquet, the dress of integrity.

Wednesday of the 20th Week in Ordinary Time

Matthew 20:1-16

Through the “Parable of the Vineyard Workers” Jesus reminds his disciples that in serving they are not supposed to put too much emphasis on their personal efforts. They should not count the amount of work they have done, or even how well they have done their work. Everything is grace. Even the strong desire to serve is a result of God's grace. Hence, we should neither be boastful nor seek rewards for our accomplishments. God knows how to take care of all those who love and serve Him.

Because people have different needs and concerns, the grace of God will also differ in kinds and sizes from person to person. We should not be envious of the grace of other people because they are our brothers and sisters in Christ. Their success is our success, their joy is also our joy. It is enough to know that God loves us all.

Today we are asked to acquire the virtues of gratitude and sympathy. First of all, let us be thankful to God for the many blessings that we continue to receive from Him everyday, including the opportunity to serve Him and other people. And second, let us be sympathetic to our neighbors not only in times of victory but also in moments of grief and misery.

Mateo 20:1-16

Dili kita angay nga masina sa grasya sa ubang mga tawo tungod kay sila ato mang mga igsoon diha ni Kristo. Ang ilang kadaogan ato usab nga kadaogan, ug ang ilang kalipay ato usab nga kalipay. Igo na para kanato ang kamatuoran nga kitang tanan gihigugma sa Dios.

Tuesday of the 20th Week in Ordinary Time

Matthew 19:23-30

The rich would find it very difficult to enter the kingdom of God if their material wealth makes them proud, or if it alienates them from God and from their neighbors. There are people, who after enriching themselves, become proud, selfish and unapproachable. Because of worldly concerns, many rich people would also forget to pray and eventually lose contact with their God. They would not call on God for help because they have influential people to go and money to solve their problems. In fact, one of the greatest temptations of the rich is to believe that they can live without God's help.

Despite being the Son of God, Jesus had showed us an example on how to live a simple lifestyle. He chose to belong to an ordinary family and to live in a small village together with simple people. Because of this, he had the great opportunity to serve the poor and the needy. Jesus was not materially rich, but he was rich in kindness and generosity. He always had time for others and for His Father in heaven.

Today, we are challenged to acquire the virtue of simplicity. Rich or poor, we are called to remain humble and to be generous with our time, talent and treasure. If we do not allow material things to possess us, we surely will not hesitate to serve the needs of others and we will always have time for God. In such case, it will be easier for us to enter heaven with the help of God.

Mateo 19:23-30

Ang usa ka dato maglisud sa pagsulod sa gingharian sa langit kon ang iyang bahandi makahimo niyang mapahitas-on, o kon kini makapalayo kaniya sa Dios ug sa iyang isigkatawo. Adunay mga tawo nga human maadunahan mahimong garboso, dili na masultihan, laog ug lisud na duolon. Aduna say mga adunahan nga mawad-an sa panahon para sa Dios tungod kay modaghan naman ang ilang kabilinggan nga kalibutanon. Dili na pud sila mosangpit sa Ginoo panahon sa kalisud tungod kay aduna man silay daghang kapaingnan o mahimo. Usa sa pinakadako nga tentasyon sa dato mao ang paghunahuna nga mabuhi siya bisan wala ang Ginoo.

Bisan sa iyang pagka-Anak sa Dios, si Jesus nagpakita kanato og ehemplo sa pagpuyo og yano nga kinabuhi. Gipili niya nga mahimong anak sa usa ka ordinaryong managtiayon ug magpuyo sa usa ka gamay'ng lungsod uban sa mga yanong tawo. Tungod niini, nahatagan siya og dakong kahigayonan nga makaalagad sa mga kabos ug may panginahanglan. Si Jesus dili puno sa kalibutanong butang, apan puno siya sa gugma. Sa kanunay aduna siyay panahon para sa iyang isigkatawo ug para sa Ginoo.

Karong adlawa, gihagit kita sa pagbaton sa hiyas sa pagkayano. Maadunahan o mapobre, gitawag kita nga magpabiling mapaubsanon, matinabangon ug manggihatagon sa mga talento, panahon ug bahandi. Kon dili kita magpaulipon sa kalibutanong mga butang, dili na kita magmakuli sa pagtabang sa isigkatawo ug dili na kita mahutdan og panahon para sa Dios. Tungod niini, mahimong sayon para kanato ang pagsulod sa gingharian sa langit uban sa panabang sa Ginoo.
