The Personification of all Virtues

Monday of the 23rd Week in Ordinary Time

Luke 6:6-11

The righteous person would always think of the good of people, while the wicked one would seek the downfall of others. This attitudinal contrast is clearly portrayed in the gospel today. While Jesus works for the healing of the man with a withered hand, the Pharisees keep watch of his actions to find a case against him.

For Jesus, to help somebody who is sick on a Sabbath Day is not a violation against the Law of God. In fact, by doing so the healer glorifies God who is the source of all life and well-being. What is morally wrong is to wish another person ill, especially if such is done on a holy day. The question of Jesus to the Pharisees truly hits the nail: “Is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the Sabbath, to save life or to destroy it?”

Today, we are called to possess the virtue of thoughtfulness of the good of others. Like Jesus, let us be compassionate with people who are suffering from all kinds of pain and try to find ways and means to help ease their pain.
