Wednesday of the 24th Week in Ordinary Time

Luke 37:31-35

It is almost impossible to please everybody. No matter how good your actions are, and no matter how pure are your intentions, there would be people to criticize you or to find fault in what you do. Because of this, many good people are discouraged to contribute for the common good. They would think it is better to mind one's own business and leave others to care for themselves. But is this the right attitude for a disciple of Christ?

In doing his ministry, Jesus also learned that some people would find a way to discredit him. In today's gospel, Jesus shows how unreasonable these people are: “John the Baptist came neither eating food nor drinking wine, and you said 'he is possessed by a demon.' The Son of Man came eating and drinking and you said, 'He is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of sinners and tax collectors.'” Yet, despite these negative comments of people, Jesus continued to do his missionary work because for him what God thinks is more important that what people think.

Today, we are inspired to remain steadfast in doing what is good for others. Like Jesus, let us not be discouraged even when people criticize our work because we know that there is Somebody up there who watches what we do and who knows the intentions of our hearts.
