Luke 6:12-19
Today's gospel narrates Jesus' appointments of the 12 apostles. It is quite remarkable that before he chose his first evangelizers, Jesus spent a whole night on a secluded mountain in order to pray.
It has become customary for Jesus to talk and consult his Heavenly Father before he makes major decisions. For example, before he started his public ministry, Jesus went to the desert to pray. After a long day's work, he also would look for a silent place to pray. Then, before he had to face the biggest and the most painful of his trials, Jesus went to the Garden of Gethsemane to talk with his Father.
This gospel inspires us to keep the virtue of prayerfulness. What is prayer? Spiritual writers would normally describe prayer as a loving conversation with God. Jesus teaches us to call God our Father or Friend. In praying, we give praise and thanks to God, and consult Him concerning our plans and difficulties in life for He is the One who truly knows what is good for us.
